Volume II of History of Christianity in India Released

Kakkanad: The second volume of the History of Christianity in India series, titled Spread of Christianity in India up to AD 1500: Dynamics of Difference, was officially released by His Beatitude Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, as part of the Syro-Malabar Church Day celebrations. The first copy of the book was received by Kerala Minister for Electricity, Shri Sunny Joseph.

Published under the leadership of the Liturgical Research Centre (LRC) and brought out by Primus Publications, the volume presents an authoritative scholarly study on the origins and early development of Christianity in India.

The book has been edited by Rev. Dr. Pius Malekandathil, Rev. Dr. K. S. Mathew, Rev. Dr. James Puliyurumpil, and Rev. Dr. Francis Thonippara, all noted scholars in the field of Church history.

During the release function, Mar Tony Neelankavil and Rev. Dr. Pius Malekandathil introduced the volume and highlighted its scholarly significance. They noted that the book is a valuable contribution to the study of Indian Church history, presenting the Christian heritage of India through historical records and academic research.

The speakers also observed that the History of Christianity in India series will play a vital role in preserving and transmitting the rich historical heritage and research tradition of the Syro-Malabar Church to future generations.

Comprising eleven chapters written by distinguished historians, the volume offers a historical account of the arrival of St. Thomas the Apostle in India, the formation of the Christian community, and its subsequent growth. It also examines the life of the St. Thomas Christians, their liturgical traditions, faith heritage, and cultural interactions up to AD 1500, making it an important academic resource for scholars, researchers, and students of Indian Christianity.
