Migration: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century
The 64th LRC Seminar was held on 22–23 May 2026 at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad, on the theme “Migration: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century.” The seminar brought together bishops, priests, religious, academicians, researchers, and lay leaders to reflect on the contemporary realities of migration from historical, social, economic, pastoral, and ecclesial perspectives, with special reference to the Syro-Malabar Church.
The inaugural session began with a Welcome Address by Rev. Dr. Jobin Kanjirathinkal, Executive Director of the HRC. The seminar was inaugurated by Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. The Keynote Address was delivered by Mar Tony Neelankavil, Chairman of the LRC. Mar Jose Pulickal, Episcopal Member of the HRC, delivered the Benedictory Address, and Rev. Dr. Abraham Kavilpurayidathil, Major Archiepiscopal Chancellor, offered felicitations.
A total of twelve scholarly papers were presented by eminent academicians and researchers, examining various dimensions of migration, including its social, economic, pastoral, and ecclesial implications. The presentations were followed by fruitful discussions that highlighted the challenges and opportunities of migration in the twenty-first century and explored the role of the Syro-Malabar Church in responding to the needs of migrant communities.
The seminar concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting research, informed dialogue, and effective pastoral initiatives that uphold the dignity, rights, and well-being of migrants.
